Some folks don't care much for anything that does not call attention to itself through ostentatious attributes. But as a runner, I know better. When it comes to buying shoes, especially when they are intended for minimal trail runs, I always make a point of looking beyond the obvious. This was clearly the case the last time I was looking around for a good trail running shoe and came across Merrell Men's Trail Glove 3 Minimal Trail Running Shoe.
The shoe is an evolution of Merrell Glove 2. It has a 0 mm heel-to-toe drop with a 10.5 mm stack height. The shoe's construction materials consist of fabric, synthetic, and rubber. Other features Merrell lists include what they call an Omni-Fit lacing system, which, apparently, makes the shoe nestle your feet more accurately. In my experience, the shoe was also very light in weight and generally very effective for its intended trail running role, and the lugged sole certainly helped a lot in this.
What I Like
I like that this pair of running shoes looks great, for a minimalist running shoe that is. Minimalist shoes tend to give up a lot, and sometimes, with their highly stripped down profiles, the looks usually suffer the most. You will be happy to learn that this is not the case with this pair of Merrell shoes. It will certainly not be the most beautiful pair of running shoes you have seen, but in the world of minimalist running shoes, it is a strong contender for the top position. The manufacturer has even offered half a dozen color choices to ensure everybody is satisfied with the aesthetics of their purchase.
The shoe performs well in both dry and wet trail running conditions. I've tried to run in neutral running shoes on a natural trail, and with mud, they are a total nightmare. So, don't overlook the significance of having a shoe that can stand up to muddy weather, which the Glove 3 Trail Running Shoe does. If you don't like feeling like there are boulders attached to your feet when running in wet weather, and also like a shoe that gives you enough traction control to maintain your stability on a natural trail during dry weather, I highly recommend grabbing a pair of these running shoes.
Something You Should Know
With a noticeably thicker sole, these shoes certainly push the limits that define the average minimalist shoe. The shoe delivers on the running trails, and quite superbly actually. But the “thick” sole means that you will not have a feel of the ground beneath you as you should when wearing a minimalist running shoe. Surprisingly, this might be one of the shoe's redeeming features for those on the lookout for trail running shoes with a little better cushioning.
Of course, the thicker sole translates into better durability, which makes this shoe great for long distance assignments. I personally don't really dislike the feature, I just feel you should know about it since this is a minimalist shoe, and some people might consider the feature a concern for one reason or another.
Merrell Men's Trail Glove 3 Minimal Trail Running Shoe has all the winning features of a great minimalist running shoe. Merrell went over and beyond here, which is why this is clearly one of the best running shoes I could possibly own in the not so distant feature.
